Chapter Ten

Scone of the Day: Chocolate Chip

After we ordered we sat and chatted about random things, once our starter arrived we took turns asking each other questions to get to know each other better.

“I love Audrey Hepburn movies, I watch at least one a month. I think I’ve watched Funny Face about 100 times.” I tell David.

“I’m more of an action movie fan, or space, I’ll watch anything to do with space.” He told me.

“Oh, I like a good action movie too, but Audrey is my girl. If I’m down, she’ll cheer me up and her clothes in the movies. Wow.”

David nodded his approval. “What do you not like to eat?” It was David’s turn to ask a question.

“I’ll eat anything and I’m fantastic at picking out what ingredients are used in a dish. Mrs Mac used to cook something on a Friday and I had to guess what weird food she had used in it. Never lost in a year of trying and she had slipped in daikon radish, jack fruit and galangal to name a few of the strange things she tried to trick me with.”

“How did you do it, are you just well acquainted with different ingredients, or really good at guessing?” David asked, impressed at my weird super power.

“I’m a witch!” I laughed at dropping that in to conversation, wondering if David would take the bait. “What about you, is there anything you don’t like to eat?”

“Cucumbers. I can’t even have them on a plate, even if I take them off it I can still taste them.”

“Cucumbers don’t have any flavour.” I replied, wondering how they tasted to him. To me they are watery crunchy things with a mild hint of something.

“They do. And the smell. Blah! I’ve been told I’m a super taster because they are so strong to me, I have a lot of taste buds in the area they hit. I’ve heard people can be like with chili or spices too.”

“I trained as a food scientist and I never knew such a thing existed. I will have to look into that. If you could do one thing for fun what would it be?” My turn to ask a question.

He sat and thought about it while eating his carbonara, “I’d love to restore an old car, but I’ve never had the space in Edinburgh. My flat is big, but I don’t have a garage. Maybe I can find a car and have it as a weekend project here, the house has a garage, it’s big enough to store a car and the tools I need to fix it up.”

I liked that he was thinking ahead, had an idea that would help him put some roots down in my little town. “I could see you whiling away the hours tinkering in your garage, watching your car transform from a rust bucket to a muscle car. You could do it if you stay at Malcolm’s house at the weekends.”

“It’s another reason I want to keep the house.
